Safe Reversing Guide

Dec 25, 2023

In the industrial and warehousing industries, forklifts are an indispensable tool for moving heavy loads and goods. However, forklift operation involves high risks, so the driver must always be alert and master the correct driving skills, especially when reversing.Whenever a vehicle is backing up, there is a risk of dangerous backing up or being hit.

For internal combustion forklift, electric counterbalance forklift and some VNA forklift, due to their complex operation and large body, it is more prone to reverse safety accidents. Therefore, it is important for every driver who is unsure of their ability to reverse, to spend time practicing in a safe area, to understand the driving vehicle, the handling and its blind spots.

Basic Forklift Reversing Skills

1. Check the forklift periodically

Before performing any operation, the driver should regularly check the mechanical components and braking system of the forklift. Make sure the brake system and reverse signal are working properly, this is the key to ensure safe reversing.

2. Plan the reverse route

Before starting to reverse, the driver should plan the reverse route. Clear obstacles along the route and make sure no people or other vehicles are in the vicinity. If possible, use a backup spotter to help guide the astern.

3. Slow and steady operation

When reversing, the driver should maintain a slow and steady speed. Reversing quickly increases the risk of an accident, so make sure the forklift is moving at a moderate speed. In addition, use smooth acceleration and braking to avoid sharp braking or acceleration.

4. Have good posture

Proper posture is essential for forklift operation. Adjust the seats and mirrors to ensure a clear view of the rear and surrounding environment when reversing. Maintaining good posture will help you better control the forklift.

5. Use your rearview mirror

Forklift rearview mirror is an important tool for the driver. Make sure the mirrors are clean and provide a clear view. When backing up, always look carefully at the image in the rearview mirror to ensure the safety of your surroundings.

6. Observe signs and lines

Workplaces usually mark areas and routes for forklift trucks. The driver must follow these signs and markings to ensure that the forklift is backing up in a safe area. If there is no relevant sign, you should contact the supervisor or security personnel in a timely manner.

In order to reduce the risk of accidents, it is necessary not only to master basic safety regulations and empirical skills, but also to rely on innovative technologies.

1. Camera monitoring: The forklift is equipped with cameras that can capture people and objects around it. These images are displayed on a display in the cab.

2. Portrait and object recognition: such as radar technology is used to identify people and objects in images. This helps the driver more easily notice potential obstacles when backing up.

3. Warning sound: When the system detects potentially dangerous objects or people, it will immediately issue warning sound to remind drivers and pedestrians to pay attention.

4. Automatic deceleration or stop: When the system determines that there is a risk of collision, it will automatically send a deceleration or stop signal. The forklift will automatically slow down to avoid a collision, or stop if necessary.

Advantages of forklift collision avoidance system

1. Improve safety: forklift anti-collision system can greatly reduce the risk of reversing accidents and protect the safety of drivers and other staff.

2. Reduce accident costs: Accidents can lead to costly losses and downtime. This system can reduce maintenance and insurance costs.

3. Reduce human error: Even if the driver is unaware of a potential risk, the system automatically takes action, thus reducing the possibility of human error.

4. Future scalability: This technology can also be integrated with the fleet management system to further improve the safety and efficiency of forklift operation in terms of data sharing, real-time monitoring, intelligent scheduling, and data analysis.
